About me
Leon Donald Orotta is a Tanzanian Remote Sensing Data Scientist with over 20 years of experience in geospatial technologies, land surveying, and environmental monitoring. He holds a Master of Science in Data Science and Information Systems from Osiri University, a Postgraduate Diploma in GIS and Remote Sensing from ARCSSTEE Nigeria, and an Advanced Diploma in Land Survey from the Kenya Institute of Surveying and Mapping.
Leon has served as a geospatial expert in various national and international assignments, including with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNOPS, VSO Nepal, and BR Real Estate. His recent work focuses on the regularization of informal settlements, integrating satellite data, AI/ML models, and GIS for sustainable land management and climate resilience in Africa.
He has attended and contributed to several international conferences and training workshops on Earth observation, PolSAR, InSAR, disaster risk reduction, and GNSS. Leon is an active member of professional bodies such as ISPRS, CASLE, IGS, and the Institution of Surveyors of Tanzania. He is also a published author on the use of remote sensing for drought monitoring, urban heat islands, and landslide vulnerability in Tanzania
